When we work individually, we work to
help change unhealthy patterns and habits at the same time as we go deep to find
out what's underneath these habits.
All human beings have the ability to choose to move toward health and well being.
Because of societal pressure to be thin, it is common for people to
concentrate of food and diets and the pursuit of a "perfect"
body. Because this has become the social norm, many people become
obsessed with this pursuit sometimes foresaking other things that are
going on in their lives. Food and dieting and binge eating takes center
stage and becomes the focus of their lives while other issues get
sweeped under the rug. People begin to cope with other parts of their
lives by concentrating on food and body image. Often times, binge
eating is used as a way to self soothe and to numb whatever feelings
are coming up around the issues and challenges of life. That's
okay. If you overeat you are not bad. If you undereat you are not bad
(or good). Habits with food are coping mechanisms. In therapy, we learn
other coping mechanisms that replace overeating or dieting, we look at
the issues that have been covered up and stuffed down with food, we
learn how to increase our capacity to sit with uncomfortable feelings
so that we don't have to turn to food and food obsession. I
utilize the following types of modalities in
my work to help people heal from food and eating issues:
CBT -
(Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) Together, we identify unhealthy
patterns of thinking
and the reactions to those thoughts which usually lead to certain behaviors. We then
replace them with
healthier thoughts.
Somatic Therapy- Puts the focus on how your feelings have manifested in your body. We pay
attention to bodily sensations which indicate where you might be
holding emotions
or
difficult feelings. This gives us more information about what might be
going on.
Hypnotherapy- This allows clients, if they choose, to go into a trance state to help them to
work
through issues in a very relaxed state. This also involves guided
visualizations and
meditations.
Psychodynamics- Psychoanalysis can help the client recognize family dynamics and social patterns that helped the
client
get to the place that he or she is currently in. Discussing the
past can bring new light to the present
situation
and can also give the client insight on how he or she can do something
differently.
Individual therapy is avaible for clients with Binge Eating Disorder, Compulsive Overeating, Diet Addicts, Food Addicts,
Obsession with food, calories, body size, shape and weight or any other
issues around food and body image that you might be dealing with.
Couples Counseling and Family Counseling is available as well.
